Federal Skilled Worker Program
The Federal Skilled Worker Program (or FSWP) is a Canadian visa program for skilled immigrants with the right skills and educational qualifications to begin a new professional journey working in Canada. There are specific criteria that must be met in order to qualify for this Permanent Resident Visa to Canada. It is also important to note that this particular Canadian immigration program is points-based and a minimum point score must be reached as part of the eligibility process.
Applicants must have a period of one year or longer of compensated, full-time work experience to qualify. Moreover, the timeline of that work experience must fall within the past 10 years. The type of work rendered must also be in one of the many jobs that fall under the Skill Level 0, A, or B categories. Such categories are defined accordingly by the National Occupational Classification codes or NOC.
Examples of the types of occupations that qualify for the FSWP include: accountants, architects, audiologists and speech pathologists, construction managers, financial and investment analysts, general practitioners and family physicians, human resources managers, mechanical engineers, psychologists, registered nurses, secondary school teachers, software engineers, and university professors – among many others!
In addition, applicants must score 67 points or higher out of 100 possible points for various factors. All the other necessary criteria must be met, too, in order to qualify.
There are six factors for which an applicant can receive points, including skills in the English and French languages, educational attainment, qualifying working experience, adaptability for immigration to Canada, age, and a qualifying offer of work in Canada. Federal Skilled Trades Program
There are thousands of in-demand jobs in Canada and the doors for these jobs are very much open for skilled immigrants in various trades. Examples of such occupations include carpenters, power engineers, electricians, metal workers, plumbers, mining and quarrying supervisors, repair workers, etc. This Canadian visa program encompasses skilled trades in construction, the technical field, and natural resources.
The required educational attainment is at least a high school diploma. Applicants must also have training specifically intended for the trade they are pursuing.
Additionally, the Federal Skilled Trades Program requires at least two years of full-time, compensated employment in an eligible occupation within the previous five years. Other criteria must also be met and upon their satisfaction, applicants may apply for Express Entry to Canada. READ MORE!
Provincial Nominees Program
Skilled immigrants who want to work in Canada, as well as settle down in a particular territory or province therein, may apply for the Provincial Nominees Program (or PNP). The territories and provinces that take part in the PNP each have their own criteria for qualification, all of which must be met satisfactorily.
Upon the fulfillment of the PNP criteria of a specific territory or province, applicants may receive what is called a Provincial Nomination Certificate. This is followed by the option to apply for a Canadian permanent resident visa. The application for this visa is done with the national government of Canada.

Quebec Skilled Worker Program
Thousands of mostly French-speaking immigrants relocate to Quebec each year through the Quebec Skilled Worker Program (or QSWP). This points-based Canadian immigration program has two key steps.
A foreign worker first applies to the QSWP through Quebec’s “Arrima” online portal. The Quebec immigration officials will then review the applicant’s Expression of Interest (EOI) and calculate the points based on education, French and English language skills, age, work experience, spouse or partner traits, getting an offer of employment in Quebec, number of children, and financial resources. A single applicant who gets 50 points, or an applicant who has a spouse or partner who receives 59 points, will be placed in the Expression of Interest Bank (EIB).
If the applicant receives the required points and the Quebec provincial officials issue him or her a Certificat de sélection du Québec (CSQ), the second major step is to apply for a Permanent Resident Visa to Canada with the national immigration agency. The applicant and accompanying family members will need to satisfy the health, character and proof of funds requirements and other criteria. Common Criteria for a
Canadian Visa
Although each Canadian immigration program has its own unique requirements for eligibility, there are some criteria that are present across the programs.
The common criteria for a Permanent Resident Visa to Canada are as follows:
- Applicants must be 18 years old and above to apply (parents apply for their minor children).
- Applicants must be in good health. Medical examinations may be necessary to confirm this.
- Applicants must have good character. In some instances, police certificates may be necessary.
- Applicants need good French or English language skills. An evaluation exam will be required.
- Applicants have to pay the necessary government fees.
- Applicants must have the necessary documents, such as a valid passport.
More Specific Requirements
Canadian visa programs for so-called “economic immigrants” require applicants to have the appropriate educational attainment, work experience, adequate skills in the French or English languages, among other specific requirements.
The FSWP and QSWP both use a points system, in which points are given to applicants for different factors and they are required to receive a minimum number of points.
Many of the PNPs require that an applicant have a “connection” to the province or territory (for example, studying there previously as an international student, having close family living there, etc.).
